Frances Sarah Wakely, Ryan & Brydon

1861–1942

The youngest of the six, and the last to die — a Morpeth postal assistant who married twice, first at thirty-six and again at fifty-one.

Born
5 May 1861 · Morpeth, NSW
Died
10 June 1942 · Maitland West, NSW
Married
John J. Ryan (m. 1897); James William Brydon (m. 1912)

Frances Sarah was the youngest of Charles and Frances Wakely’s six children, born at Morpeth on 5 May 1861.1 Like her brothers, she made her career in the Post and Telegraph service: first appointed on 7 November 1886, she was still a postal assistant at Morpeth twelve years later, on a clerical salary of £100.2

She did not marry until 1897, at East Maitland, when she was already thirty-six: her husband was John J. Ryan.3 What became of that marriage is not known, but by 1912 she was marrying again, at Nowra — recorded there under the name Frances S. Ryan — this time to James William Brydon, four years her senior.4

James William Brydon died on 16 July 1924, and was buried at Campbells Hill Cemetery, Maitland.5 Frances Sarah outlived him by eighteen years, dying on 10 June 1942 — the last of Charles and Frances Wakely’s six children to go — and was buried in the same cemetery.6
