A London upholsterer transported for life at seventeen, landed not at Sydney but at Hobart — and pardoned within a year of talking his way to the mainland. He kept the Nepean ferry, an inn at Penrith, and finally a schoolroom at Richmond, on the Hawkesbury, where his daughter Mary Jane grew up to marry into the Jeffries family.
