The doorway into the Baldock line
Ellen McIntosh
1820–1860
Married a Surry Hills waterman, raised a daughter who married a Bathurst coachbuilder — and carries this family into the chapter that follows.
- Married
- George Bawn (1813–1883)
- Lived
- ~40 years
Ellen was born 3 July 1820 in Sydney and baptised there on 16 July. She married George Bawn, a waterman of Surry Hills, at the Scots Church, Sydney, around 1840. George had been born about 1813 and died in 1883; Ellen predeceased him, dying in 1860.
Their daughter Frances Elizabeth Bawn married Alfred Baldock, a Bathurst coachbuilder, on 1 January 1863 — a marriage neither of Frances Elizabeth’s parents lived to see, Ellen dead three years and George still eighteen months off remarrying. George Bawn’s own life, and that marriage and the twelve children it produced, are told in full in the two companion chapters that follow this one.
George didn’t stay a widower. In 1860, the same year Ellen died, her brother John McIntosh also died; the following year, George married John’s widow, Mary Jane — so for the last decades of his life, George Bawn was married to a woman who had once been his own sister-in-law.
